International Women’s Day: Let’s invest more in women in tech

A message from the ITU Secretary-General

Women and girls still grapple with major obstacles in today’s world, especially in the tech sector.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day recognizes where we are, urging countries, communities, and organizations worldwide to Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.

What does that mean for us here at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the key United Nations digital agency?

The work we do today must pave the way for a future where women participate actively and equally in the technology ecosystem.

Why would women take up tech?

They will participate because they can afford digital devices and data, because they feel safe online, and because they have the necessary skills to navigate and lead the digital world with confidence.

That future is within our grasp if we invest in it now – and not just on International Women’s Day, but every single day. That’s how all of us can accelerate progress together.

Gender equality is key in the sustainable digital future we envisage here at ITU.

Every one of us — women and men — has a role to play in getting there.

Happy International Women’s Day!
