Suva, Fiji – 25 February 2025 – The Government of Fiji officially launched its National E-commerce Strategy 2025–2029, becoming the fifth Forum Island Country with an e-commerce strategy. This document was developed in collaboration with the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications, with support from Australia through the Pacific Digital Economy Programme (PDEP).
The National E-commerce Strategy further reinforces the country’s commitment to modernising its trade systems, fostering innovation, and supporting a dynamic and competitive economy. It aligns with broader national priorities of resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity, guiding policymakers and development partners towards a forward-looking vision for Fiji’s digital transformation.
Hon. Manoa Kamikamica, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, commented ‘Fiji has the potential to develop strong competitive advantages in the e-commerce sector, with its digitally savvy population and growing enthusiasm for new technologies creating a strong foundation for rapid growth and competitive advantage’. Also joining the launch were representatives from Fiji’s private sector, the Australian High Commission to Fiji and UNCTAD.
The strategy presents a comprehensive five-year roadmap tailored to Fiji’s unique context, shaped through extensive consultations with government entities, business associations, industry experts, civil society groups, and development partners. It builds on the 2021 National E-commerce Assessment, conducted by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), and aligns with the Pacific Regional E-commerce Strategy and Roadmap. PDEP is a joint initiative between UNDP, UNCDF and UNCTAD to support the development of inclusive digital economies in the Pacific. PDEP is jointly supported by the European Union, the Australian and New Zealand Governments.
