Jordan joins regional push to grow exports through digital trade

A new programme is set to help Jordanian businesses sell online, reach new markets, and compete more effectively in the digital economy.

The programme is co-implemented by The International Trade Centre (ITC) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) to support Jordanian small businesses selling online. Together, the two organizations aim to create a more connected and competitive digital trade ecosystem that benefits businesses of all sizes, including those owned by women.

ITC will help them to build the practical skills and systems they need to use the digital channel to reach export markets and navigate digital trade logistics. The German development agency GIZ will work with public institutions to strengthen the policy and regulatory environment that shapes how digital trade works in Jordan.

The launch on 19 April brought together senior representatives from Jordan's Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, the European Union Delegation, and the German Embassy, alongside ITC and GIZ – signing strong political commitment to the initiative from the outset. Dana Al-Zoubi, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply attended the launched with German Ambassador Bertram von Moltke and Thibaut Moyer, acting head of cooperation at the EU Delegation.

What is planned for Jordan: national-level activities in Jordan aimed at supporting the digital trade ecosystem, strengthening policies and regulatory frameworks, and enhancing private sector engagement, with a particular focus on empowering SMEs to leverage digital trade opportunities and improve their competitiveness.

‘The launch of the Regional Digital Trade Project will boost the competitiveness of the Jordanian economy,’ Al-Zoubi said.

Co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), this regional initiative covers eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Four countries among them Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia will receive targeted national-level support tailored to their specific needs.

Jordanian small businesses set to compete

During the event, Ahmad Hammad of ITC and Lara Abu Salim of GIZ outlined the programme’s goals and key activities, emphasizing opportunities for Jordanian small businesses to boost e-commerce capabilities, improve competitiveness, and expand into regional and global markets.

Two panel discussions explored the opportunities and obstacles shaping Jordan's digital trade landscape — covering policy and regulation, trade facilitation and logistics, and the specific challenges facing SMEs and women-owned businesses.

Participants from Jordan Customs, the Business Development Center, the Academy of Logistics and E-Commerce, and the Business and Professional Women Association contributed to the discussions.

The launch marks a major step forward for Jordan and the wider South Mediterranean region. By equipping small businesses with the tools and systems to thrive in digital trade, the initiative is set to boost competitiveness, create jobs, and accelerate regional economic integration.

ITC and GIZ will continue to work closely with national partners to ensure Jordanian small businesses can fully unlock the opportunities of the digital economy and expand their reach across regional and global markets.
