WTO deadlock, AI boom: Unpacking MC14 and looking ahead TwiterFacebookLinkedIn
The 14th WTO Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé brought members together to address pressing issues, including those in institutional governance and digital trade. While consensus proved elusive on several fronts, the meeting highlighted both the challenges and the evolving dynamics of multilateral cooperation.
Two parallel tracks concerning digital trade took centre stage, each with distinct outcomes. The first was the long-standing moratorium on customs duties on electronic transmissions, a temporary ban renewed every two years since 1998, which expired on 31 March. The second was the decision by a subset of countries to push through with the implementation of the plurilateral Agreement on Electronic Commerce, concluded in 2024 by the Joint Initiative on e-commerce.
This webinar, co-organised by Diplo, the Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub, and the Geneva Internet Platform, unpacks digital trade-related developments in MC14 and looks ahead to their implications for the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence economy. As digital trade rules take shape through multiple channels, understanding the intersection between trade policy and AI governance becomes increasingly urgent. Our speakers will explore:
- The main outcomes and sticking points from MC14
- What the lapse of the e-commerce moratorium means — and what it does not mean
- How the plurilateral JSI e-commerce agreement may shape digital trade going forward
- The specific implications for AI development, including data flows, tariffs on digital services, and regulatory coherence
- What to expect at the next General Council meeting in May and beyond
Whether you work in trade policy, digital regulation, AI governance, or international business, this session will offer a forward-looking perspective on a complex landscape.
