Millions of cybersecurity professionals around the world are at the frontlines of tracking and addressing online threats. Yet only 2 out of 10 of these professionals are women. This gap in representation can be explained by several factors, including industry perception and culture, societal and family constraints, and barriers to entry due to limited digital and cyber literacy. In addition to limiting the number of cybersecurity professionals at a time when they are in high demand, this gap further aggravates gender disparities across other sectors. What’s more, female internet users face a higher number of cybercrime incidents and are at an increased risk of not only loss of financial data, but also when it comes to online privacy and security breaches. Together, these factors underscore the importance of designing a cyberspace that is more gender inclusive.

The event will focus on elevating the discussion on women and cybersecurity and explore perspectives from governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia.

The event will:

  • Look at the relevance of gender in cybersecurity
  • Discuss the various challenges faced by women as cybersecurity professionals and internet users, and ways to address them
  • Highlight current practices on how women are being included in cybersecurity across sectors
  • Outline advantages of including women in the cybersecurity workforce
  • Define what governments, civil society and the private sector can do to make the space more inclusive and safer
