The Fourth Ministerial Conference on Transport, held in December 2021, encouraged implementation of a regional approach on sustainable multimodal freight transport for deepening freight sustainability in Asia and the Pacific. One of the priority areas of the regional approach is to increase share of rail freight including through digitalization.

The Regional Action Programme of Sustainable Transport Development in Asia and Pacific (2022-26) also mandated the ESCAP to support initiatives on digitalization of transport. Recently the Committee on Transport, at its 7th Session held in November 2022, supported a decision on preparation of a regional strategy to accelerate rail digital transformation in Asia and the Pacific.

Accordingly, and with the support of the United Nations Development Account project on Enhancing Shift towards Sustainable Freight Transport in Asia and the Pacific, ESCAP will organize a High-Level Regional Conference on Accelerating Rail Digital Transformation with following objectives:

  • To deliberate on a regional strategy for accelerating rail digital transformation for a more competitive rail transport including way forward for its adoption
  • To share experiences on rail digitalization related challenges and emerging opportunities
  • To identify key issues for landlocked and least developing countries for them to leapfrog to digital rail

The tentative programme of the Conference is here.
