  • What is the impact of frontier technologies on inequalities?
  • How can Governments minimize risks and maximize opportunities?
  • How can international cooperation help?

The answer to these questions is critical for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Technology and Innovation Report 2021 critically examines the possibility that frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and gene editing could widen existing inequalities and create new ones. Frontier technologies are essential for sustainable development, but they could also accentuate initial inequalities. It is up to policies to reduce this risk and make frontier technologies contribute to increasing equality. Low- and middle-income developing countries and the least developing countries cannot afford to miss the new wave of rapid technological change.

At the event, the report will be launched and policy options will be discussed for countries to strategically position themselves to take advantage of new waves of technological change for inclusive and sustainable development.

The launch of the report is also part of the UNCTAD contribution to the United Nations Initiative on Financing for Development in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond, in which UNCTAD leads cluster III on finance and technology. The event will raise awareness of policy options for countries to harness these frontier technologies and leave no one behind.

His Excellency Ambassador Munir Akram of Pakistan, President of the Economic and Social Council, and Ms. Isabelle Durant, Acting Secretary-General of UNCTAD, and other high-level personalities will also participate at the event.

UNCTAD looks forward to your active participation.
