Dear all,

Welcome to the March edition of the newsletter!

In March we celebrated International Women’s Day (8th March) and World Consumer Rights Day (15th March). This year’s topic for the IWD was “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”, and despite some progress much remains to do, at all levels, for women to be fully part of the global (digital) economy. Consumer Rights Day’s theme was “Fair and responsible AI for consumers”, a topic very much on point, exploring the impacts of deepfakes and disinformation on consumers’ trust.

A few days ago we also welcomed the very first UN resolution made by the General Assembly, on a secure and trustworthy AI. This is the first time the Assembly has adopted a resolution on regulating the emerging field. At the same time, consultations on the Global Digital Compact were organized both in New York and in Geneva, where the UN Tech Envoy engaged in a series of multi-stakeholder discussions.

This month, we also would like to draw your attention to the “Digital Progress and Trends Report 2023” prepared by the World Bank Group, as well as the “Global E-waste Monitor” prepared by ITU, in partnership with UNITAR and Fondation Carmignac.

The first focuses on the importance of measuring digital progress in countries, while the second looks at the growing concern about e-waste. As digital tools and technology evolve at increased speed, a more balanced approach might be needed.

Enjoy the reading & stay safe!
